…CENTER OF KAREN APPROACHING PUERTO RICO AND THE VIRGIN ISLANDS…

At 11:00 am today, the center of Tropical Storm Karen was located near latitude 17.5 north, longitude 65.8 west or about 65 miles or 105 kilometers south- southeast of San Juan Puerto Rico.

Karen is moving toward the north near 8 mph (13 km/h), and this general motion is expected to continue today.  A north-northeastward motion with some increase in forward speed is forecast tonight through Wednesday night.  On the forecast track, the center of Karen will pass near or over Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands this afternoon and then move over the western Atlantic tonight and Wednesday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph or 65 km/h, with higher gusts. Slow strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours.

Tropical storm warnings are in effect for Puerto Rico as well as the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. Interests elsewhere in the Northern Leewards Islands should continue to monitor the progress of Karen.

…LORENZO FORECAST TO BECOME A LARGE AND POWERFUL HURRICANE…

At 11:00 am today, the center of Tropical Storm Lorenzo was located near latitude 12.4 north, longitude 29.3 west. Lorenzo is moving toward the west-northwest near 16 mph (26 km/h), and this general motion is expected to continue through early Thursday.  A northwestward motion should begin on Thursday and continue into Friday.

Maximum sustained winds remain near 65 mph (100 km/h) with higher gusts. Strengthening is forecast during the next several days, and Lorenzo is expected to become a hurricane by Wednesday, and a major hurricane on Thursday.

This system is expected to remain over the open Atlantic Ocean during the next five days.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 40 mph or 65 km/h, with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours.

At 5:00 am today, the center of Tropical Storm Lorenzo was located near latitude 12.0 north, longitude 28.0 west and is moving toward the west-northwest near 16 mph or 26 km/h. This general motion with some decrease in forward speed is expected for the next couple of days, followed by a northwest turn on Thursday.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 65 mph or 100 km/h, with higher gusts. Lorenzo is forecast to become a hurricane later today and a major hurricane on Thursday. This system is expected to remain over the open Atlantic Ocean during the next five days.

Tropical Depression Thirteen is located near 10.8N 20.9W or 365 nm SE of the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands, moving W at 13 kt. Estimated minimum pressure is 1007 mb. Maximum sustained winds of 30 kt with gust to 40 kt. A general motion toward the west is expected through Monday, with a motion toward the west-northwest expected Monday night and Tuesday. On the forecast track, the center of the depression should pass well south of the Cabo Verde Islands. latitude 12.5 north, longitude 61.7 west or about 65 miles or 105 kilometers south

 southwest of St Vincent or 30 miles or 45 Kilometers north of Grenada.

Karen is moving toward west northwest or 285 degrees at about 13 mph or 20 km/h and 

this general motion is expected to continue today. A turn toward the northwest is

forecast to occur on Monday, followed by a turn to the north on Tuesday. On the

forecast track, the center Karen will move away from the Windward Islands today  and then across the eastern Caribbean Sea tonight and Monday. On Tuesday,

Karen is expected to approach Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

A third strong tropical wave is located along the west coast of Africa and it is

showing some signs of organization. Environmental conditions are conducive for

further development and a tropical depression or tropical storm is expected to

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

…Tropical Storm Karen forms just east of the Windward Islands…

The strong tropical wave near the Windward Islands has been upgraded to 
Tropical Storm Karen. At 5:00 am today the center of Tropical Storm Karen 
was located near latitude 11.9 north, longitude 60.2 west or about 100 
miles or 165 kilometers east of Grenada or 120 miles or 190 kilometers 
southeast of St. Vincent. A tropical storm warning has been issued for 
Grenada and its dependencies, Trinidad and Tobago.  Karen is moving toward
west northwest or 285 degrees at about 9 mph or 15 km/h and this general 
motion is expected to continue today. A turn toward the northwest is 
forecast to occur on Monday, followed by a turn to the north on Tuesday. On
the forecast track, Karen will move across the Windward Islands this
afternoon and tonight, and emerge over the southeastern Caribbean Sea 
Monday morning. On Tuesday, Karen is expected to approach Puerto Rico and 
the Virgin Islands. Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph or 65 km/h and 
little change in strength is expected during the next 48 hours. 

Saint Lucia is expected to continue experiencing strong gusty winds, 
moderate to heavy showers and a few thunderstorms over the next 12 to 24 
hours.

 Another tropical wave located over the eastern Tropical Atlantic is moving westward near 20 mph or 32 km/h. showing some signs of organization. Environmental conditions are conducive for A third strong tropical wave is located along the west coast of Africa and it is further development and a tropical depression or tropical storm is expected to form on Monday or Tuesday as it moves westward to west-northwestward across the Eastern Tropical Atlantic about 18 mph or 29 km/h.

Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with some scattered showers and possibly isolated thunderstorms at first. An increase in cloudiness with showers and thunderstorms is expected tomorrow.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

A strong tropical wave located just east of the Windward Islands is 
carrying a large area of cloudiness, showers and thunderstorms. A Hurricane
Hunter aircraft has been investigating the system this afternoon and did 
not find a well defined circulation. Although the system is currently not 
well organized, some gradual development is expected and a tropical 
depression could form later this weekend or early next week. The wave is 
forecast to move quickly westward for the next day or two, crossing the 
Windward Islands on Sunday. Cloudiness and showers on the forward edge of 
the system will start affecting Saint Lucia and the Windward islands later 
this evening. Regardless of development, heavy rainfall and gusty winds 
will affect much of the Lesser Antilles over the weekend, and interests on 
those islands and Puerto Rico should monitor the progress of this 
disturbance.

Tropical Storm Jerry continues to move northwest away from our region…

At 5:00 pm today, the centre of Tropical Storm Jerry was located near 
latitude 23.0 North, longitude 65.8 West or about 320 miles or 510 
kilometres north of San Juan Puerto Rico. Jerry has maximum sustained winds
of 65 mph or 100 km/h and is moving towards the northwest away from our
region at about 14 mph or 22 km/h.

Another tropical wave located over the eastern Tropical Atlantic is moving
westward near 20 mph or 32 km/h. 

A third tropical wave is expected to move off the west coast of Africa by Sunday. Environmental conditions are expected to be conducive for development and a tropical depression or tropical storm is likely to form early next week while the wave moves westward across the Eastern Tropical Atlantic.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK
Moisture and instability in the lower atmosphere over the Eastern Caribbean, will cause some scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the islands, during the forecast period.

A tropical wave located several hundred miles east of the Windward Islands, continues to produce large area of showers and thunderstorms. The wave is forecast to move quickly westward to west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph for the next day or two, crossing the Windward Islands on Sunday. Although the system is currently disorganized, environmental conditions appear to be conducive for some development and a tropical depression could form later this weekend or early next week. A Hurricane Hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate this system this afternoon. Regardless of development, heavy rainfall is possible over much of the Lesser Antilles over the weekend, and interests on those islands and Puerto Rico should monitor the progress of this disturbance.

At 11:00 am today, the centre of Tropical Storm Jerry was located near latitude 22.0 North, longitude 65.0 West or about 260 miles or 415 kilometres north northeast of San Juan Puerto Rico.

Tropical Storm Jerry pose no threat to Saint Lucia.

Another tropical wave located over the eastern Tropical Atlantic is moving westward near 15 mph or 24 km/h.

A third tropical wave is forecast to move off the west coast of Africa this weekend. Environmental conditions are expected to be conducive for development and a tropical depression or tropical storm is likely to form early next week while the wave moves westward across the Eastern Tropical Atlantic.
